US renewables supplied 30.3% of electricity in early 2026, EIA data shows
EIA data through May 2026 shows renewables supplied 30.3% of US electricity generation, up from 28.2% a year earlier, as solar capacity grew.

Renewables supplied 30.3% of total US electricity generation during the first five months of 2026, up from 28.2% in the same period a year earlier, according to the US Energy Information Administration’s “Electric Power Monthly” report, released July 23, 2026 with data through May 31, 2026. The renewables share of US electricity generation includes solar, wind, hydropower, biomass and geothermal output, as reported by CleanTechnica, which cited an analysis of the EIA data by the SUN DAY Campaign, a renewable-energy advocacy nonprofit.
Solar and capacity growth drove the gain
Total renewable generating capacity grew by roughly 44,712 megawatts (MW) between June 2025 and May 2026, with utility-scale solar capacity (systems over 1 MW) alone adding about 27,995 MW, according to the EIA data cited by CleanTechnica. Small-scale solar capacity grew by about 6,664 MW and wind by about 10,253 MW over the same period. Generation from renewables during the January-May 2026 period rose 10.1% year over year, while natural gas generation grew only 2.5% and nuclear grew 1.3%, per the same analysis.

Capacity outlook and the natural gas comparison
Natural gas remains the largest single source of US generation, at roughly 40% of the mix in 2026, per EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook figures. On installed generating capacity specifically, rather than actual generation, renewables held a 34.1% share of total US utility-scale capacity as of May 31, 2026, which EIA projects will rise to 37.0% by May 2027. The SUN DAY Campaign’s separate analysis of that capacity data projects total renewable generating capacity could exceed natural gas generating capacity, measured in installed megawatts, by around spring 2027 if small-scale solar additions continue at their current pace of about 6,000 MW per year – a capacity projection, not a forecast that renewables will generate more electricity than natural gas by that date.
The gain builds on trends Winss Solutions has tracked through the year, including EIA’s forecast of a 19% rise in summer 2026 solar generation and solar and storage installations setting new records in the first half of 2026.
Background
The EIA’s Electric Power Monthly report is the US government’s primary monthly accounting of electricity generation, capacity and fuel use across utility-scale and small-scale sources, published roughly one month after the period it covers. Renewables’ share of US generation has climbed steadily over the past decade as utility-scale solar and wind capacity additions have outpaced retirements of coal-fired generation. The July 23, 2026 release, covering data through May, is the latest in that series and shows the growth trend continuing into 2026 even as natural gas remains the single largest source of US electricity.
