The University of Sydney will give roughly 80,000 students and staff access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu tool under a multi-year partnership announced September 14, 2026, alongside a AUD $1 million investment in a new “AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund.” The university said the rollout will happen in stages across teaching, research and operations, and that ChatGPT Edu will supplement its own existing AI education platform, Cogniti, rather than replace it.
Vice-Chancellor Mark Scott and Vice-President of Operations Nicole Gower are quoted in the university’s announcement, alongside OpenAI Asia-Pacific managing director Kiran Mani. The University of Sydney stated that data from its students and staff will not be used to train OpenAI’s models. Trade outlet iTnews reported on September 15, 2026 that a university spokesperson was unable to confirm the exact staged rollout schedule in time for publication, so specific dates below are attributed to student newspaper Honi Soit’s reporting rather than to the university directly.
Timing and the strike link, according to Honi Soit
According to Honi Soit, which first reported the deal, staff are expected to gain ChatGPT Edu access from October 2026, with students following from Semester 1, 2027. Honi Soit also reported that the university’s National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) branch was not consulted on the OpenAI deal specifically, and linked the announcement to broader tension after a 24-hour NTEU strike on September 2, 2026 over pay, workload and job-security concerns, some of which touched on AI. The strike itself is independently confirmed by the University of Sydney’s own “response to industrial action” statement and NTEU’s NSW branch. The specific claim that the university did not consult the union on the OpenAI deal, and the direct causal link between the strike and the deal’s timing, have not been independently confirmed beyond Honi Soit’s reporting.
The University of Sydney’s move follows a similar deal at UNSW Sydney, announced in the same week, which also covers about 80,000 students and staff, according to trade press coverage. That makes the two universities the latest in a run of Australian and international institutions to sign ChatGPT Edu agreements in 2026.

About the University of Sydney
The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia’s oldest university and one of the country’s largest, based in Sydney, New South Wales. It has built its own AI education platform, Cogniti, which the university says will continue operating alongside the new ChatGPT Edu access rather than being replaced by it. The university has previously stated a “responsible AI” approach to classroom technology, and the new deal follows a wave of similar agreements at other institutions, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers expansion to 55 school systems, the National University of Singapore’s compulsory AI literacy course built around ChatGPT Edu, and Western Governors University’s plan for an AI-native learning model with Anthropic. The AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund announced alongside the ChatGPT Edu deal is new, and the university has not yet detailed which specific research projects it will support.
