Moment Energy opened Megafactory 1 in Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 23, 2026, a plant that repurposes retired electric-vehicle batteries into commercial-scale energy storage. The company, which describes the site as the world’s largest factory for second-life EV batteries, says it brought the plant online six weeks after announcing the project. Rather than building new cells, the facility turns used EV packs into battery energy storage systems that can supply data centers, hospitals, factories, and microgrids.
The plant addresses two trends at once. Electricity demand is climbing, while the first wave of EV batteries is reaching retirement age. Many retired packs no longer hold enough capacity for driving but retain enough for stationary storage, where weight and size matter less.
How the second-life EV batteries are reused
Moment Energy takes packs that have left service in vehicles, tests them, and assembles them into stationary battery energy storage systems. The company says Megafactory 1 will produce 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of these systems per year by 2030. It expects the plant to create more than 100 direct jobs and support more than 1,000 indirect jobs across British Columbia.
“We announced this project six weeks ago. Today it’s operational,” said Edward Chiang, cofounder and CEO of Moment Energy. He said the pace shows “the right technology can enable North America to re-onshore domestic manufacturing in weeks, not decades.” Repurposing used packs before recycling is an example of the circular economy, keeping materials in use for longer and adding to the mix of long-duration options such as iron-air batteries.

The Canadian government, through Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan), invested CA$4.9 million. Earlier in 2026 the company closed a US$40 million Series B round, bringing its total funding to more than US$100 million. Moment Energy also says it became the first company to earn both product safety and functional safety certification for a battery management system built specifically for second-life EV batteries.
The stationary systems are aimed at sites that need steady, reliable power, including data centers, hospitals, factories, and microgrids. The approach depends on a growing supply of used packs from electric vehicles, which is expanding as early EV fleets age.
