Meta has signed a multi-year agreement to purchase environmental attribute certificates from MacroCycle Technologies, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup, in a chemical PET recycling deal reported by ESG Today on September 25, 2026 and TechCrunch on September 22, 2026. The certificates represent avoided emissions from Meta’s plastics supply chain, and TechCrunch reported it is the first deal of its kind for Meta. Revenue from the agreement will help finance MacroCycle’s first commercial production facility, planned for the southeastern United States with a capacity of 5,000 metric tons of recycled PET per year, according to ESG Today.

MacroCycle’s process, branded SolvoGenesis, is a patented solvent-based method that dissolves and purifies PET plastic without the high heat used in conventional processes, breaking it down into reusable intermediate structures that are reformed into virgin-quality resin. ESG Today reported the process uses roughly 80% less energy than producing virgin PET from fossil fuels, while TechCrunch described the same approximate figure as an 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared with new, non-recycled virgin PET plastic. The two outlets frame the same headline number differently – energy use versus carbon emissions – and neither MacroCycle nor Meta has published a release stating which measure is accurate, so both framings are noted here.

MacroCycle’s first Meta-backed plant is planned at 5,000 metric tons per year, a tenth the 50,000-tonne capacity the company targets for subsequent facilities, per TechCrunch.

Deal structure and reactions

Devon Lake, Meta’s head of net-zero strategy, said the company hopes the transaction with MacroCycle “will have a similar outcome in the plastics market,” according to ESG Today, without elaborating on a specific prior deal being referenced. MacroCycle co-founder and chief executive Stewart Peña Feliz said SolvoGenesis “sidesteps the tradeoff” between recycled-material quality and energy use, producing virgin-quality material “at a fraction of the energy,” ESG Today reported. Neither company disclosed the dollar value of the environmental-attribute-certificate purchase, and no construction start or completion date for the facility has been made public.

The deal extends a broader push toward plastics circularity that Winss Solutions has covered, including the EU’s push at the Busan summit for a global plastics treaty and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s finding that circular economy policies largely overlook bio-based materials.

About MacroCycle Technologies

MacroCycle Technologies was founded in 2023 and is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company is led by chief executive Stewart Peña Feliz, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, and chief technology officer Jan-Georg Rosenboom. MacroCycle raised a $6.5 million seed round in February 2025, led by Clean Energy Ventures and Volta Circle with participation from KDT Ventures and Neotribe Ventures. The company has worked with partners including Indorama Ventures, North Carolina State University, MIT delta v, Breakthrough Energy and Greentown Labs, and markets additional product lines, MacroTEX and MacroPACK, for recycling polyester textiles. The Meta agreement is MacroCycle’s first disclosed deal financing a commercial-scale production facility since its 2023 founding.
