Google launches AI study tools across Search and Gemini

Google released a set of Google AI study tools across Search and the Gemini app on 19 August 2026, timed to the northern-hemisphere back-to-school period. The Search package adds five learning features, including practice quizzes built with four test-prep companies for nine standardised exams. Alongside it, Google is offering eligible students a year of its paid AI subscription at no charge, redeemable until 31 December 2026.

Neither announcement carries a quote from a named executive. Both are first-person posts, the Search one written by Awaneesh Verma, Distinguished Product Manager for Search, and the Gemini one by Jennifer Shen, Director of Product Management for the Gemini app.

What the Google AI study tools do in Search

The practice quizzes are the clearest new capability. Google says they draw on content from The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah and Akira Enem, cover nine named tests, and include an explanation for each answer plus links to source material. They are free and available globally in English, in both AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The nine exams are the ACT, AP, ENEM, GRE, JEE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET and SAT. That list spans three national systems: ENEM is Brazil’s national secondary exam, while JEE and NEET are India’s engineering and medical entrance tests. Careers360, PhysicsWallah and Akira Enem serve those markets rather than the United States.

One geographic limit is worth reading closely, because it applies to a single feature rather than the whole package. Google’s footnote states that notebooks in AI Mode “will be available in English in all countries supported by Gemini Notebook, excluding the European Economic Area (EEA)”. No other Search feature in the announcement carries a regional carve-out. The post also confirms a rename that Google had not previously spelled out in a product announcement: NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook.

The Gemini app side, and what the free year actually includes

Four items are rolling out in the Gemini app: a student hub at gemini.google.com/students, study notebooks, interactive visualisations including 3D simulations, and Deep Research inside Gemini Live. Study notebooks are not new; Google launched them in June 2026. What the app adds now is a diagnostic quiz that identifies gaps in uploaded class material before generating lessons, a progress dashboard, and, in the coming weeks, the option to read exam and assignment dates out of a syllabus into Google Calendar with the user’s permission.

The subscription offer splits by geography, and the two tiers are not equivalent.

Students in the United States get Google AI Pro for twelve months, which Google lists at $19.99 a month and which bundles 5TB of storage, Gemini Spark, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and Google Health Premium. Outside the United States, the offer is Google AI Plus, listed at $4.99 a month, with 400GB of storage and Gemini Omni. Google states the Plus offer is open in over 140 markets but excludes the United States, Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia.

The terms attach conditions that the headline does not. Both offers require a valid payment method at sign-up and renew automatically at list price unless cancelled. Student status is verified through SheerID. The bundled Pro and YouTube Premium discount, which Google describes only as “up to 70% off”, is “not available on school-issued accounts” and is valid “for up to 4 years”. Some outlets have put a $9 monthly figure on that bundle and a $200 annual price on AI Pro; neither number appears in Google’s own posts.

Where this sits against Google’s classroom products

The 19 August release is consumer-facing. Google’s school-side rollout ran separately earlier in the month: a Workspace update dated 4 August 2026 extended Gemini in Google Classroom to students of all ages, reaching the web on 10 August and mobile on 17 August, across Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus. That is the strand covered in our report on Google AI for education tools at ISTE 2026, where the company placed teachers in control of when AI enters a lesson. Neither August announcement mentions Guided Learning, Canvas or Google’s Learn Your Way AI-augmented textbooks, so those should not be read as part of this launch.

TechCrunch framed the release as a distribution play, describing it as “Google’s latest effort to make Gemini the AI assistant that students turn to when learning and studying, as it competes with companies like OpenAI and education startups such as Knowt and Gauth”. The competitive picture also now includes free teacher-facing products from rivals, among them Anthropic’s free Claude for Teachers for US K-12.

Demand is not the constraint. Survey work this year found that 70 per cent of US teenagers already use AI for schoolwork, while only about 30 per cent said a teacher had discussed safe use with them. Google’s own materials state that its education tools are “built to be safe by design and rooted in proven learning science”, but the 19 August posts publish no efficacy data for the new features and no evaluation of the practice quizzes.

Background

Google has been layering study features onto its consumer products through 2026 rather than shipping a single education app. NotebookLM, the source-grounded research tool released to the public in 2023, was folded into the Gemini brand and appears in this announcement as Gemini Notebook. Study notebooks arrived in the Gemini app in June 2026. Teacher-facing tools moved through Google Classroom over the same period, with the connected Classroom app in Gemini introduced in late June 2026 and the age restriction on Gemini in Classroom lifted in August. Learn Your Way, the AI-augmented textbook research project, ran on a separate track. The 19 August package is the first time Google has attached a paid subscription giveaway to that education push at scale, and the redemption deadline of 31 December 2026 sets the window in which its effect on Gemini’s student user base will be visible.
