Google expands educator-led AI in Classroom at ISTELive 2026
At ISTELive 2026, Google expanded educator-led AI in Google Classroom and pledged AI literacy training for 6 million US educators.

Google AI for education moved deeper into the classroom on June 25, 2026, when Google for Education set out a wave of teacher-led AI tools ahead of the ISTELive 2026 conference in Orlando, held June 28 to July 1. The company said it is expanding teacher-led AI activities in Google Classroom, launching a connected Classroom app in Gemini, opening a Google Classroom Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to outside platforms, and aiming to make AI training available to all 6 million educators in the United States. The through-line is control: every new feature is built to keep teachers, not the software, deciding how and when AI enters a lesson.
The announcement is the education arm of a broader push. It lands a day after Microsoft released its third annual AI in education report, and it answers the same finding that report flagged: adoption is widespread, but teachers want training and clear control. Google framed its tools around learning science and teacher oversight rather than open-ended chatbots.
What Google AI for education announced for classrooms
Google said its teacher-led AI activities rest on three rules: keep educators in the lead, stay rooted in the curriculum, and give actionable insights. Teachers choose which class materials inform an activity, then see how individual students and the class as a whole engage with the material. The same teacher-led model is coming to Guided Learning in Gemini, study notebooks in Gemini, and NotebookLM inside Google Classroom over the coming months.

How teacher-led AI is meant to work
Google’s design routes the AI through the teacher at both ends: the teacher sets the inputs, and the teacher reads the outputs. The flow below follows the loop the company described.
The connected Classroom app in Gemini, available now, draws on a class’s existing assignments, grades and materials to flag students who may need support and to draft activities. Google stated the data stays within Google Workspace for Education and is not used to train its AI models. In the coming months, the Google Classroom MCP server will let outside edtech platforms reference that same Classroom context through a standard connection, so third-party tools can work from a teacher’s real class data. A pledge to train 6 million educators
The second half of the announcement is training. Google said the Google AI Educator Series, developed with ISTE+ASCD, has the ambition to reach all 6 million educators in the United States so teachers feel confident choosing how to use AI. The company paired this with classroom controls such as Focus Mode in Class tools on Chromebooks, which lets a teacher lock student screens to approved materials during an activity.
Google.org also announced new funding at the 2026 ISTE conference for two long-term partners working on education and AI. The training emphasis tracks the gap that institutional reviews keep finding, including the OECD’s work on how generative AI is transforming education, where teacher capacity, not tool availability, is the binding constraint.
