Commonwealth Fusion Systems raises $1 billion, taking total funding to $4 billion

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) raised $1 billion in additional equity financing, the Devens, Massachusetts-based company announced on July 30, 2026. The round brings the total capital CFS has raised since its 2018 founding to $4 billion, the company said, making it the best-funded private fusion energy company worldwide. The Commonwealth Fusion Systems funding round is the largest single fundraise in the fusion industry since CFS’s own $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021, according to the company.
CFS said the new investors include pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and infrastructure and industrial corporate partners. The company declined to name specific backers when asked by TechCrunch. CFS’s $4 billion total represents about 30 percent of all capital raised by the fusion industry to date, the company said.
The Commonwealth Fusion Systems funding round follows a shift toward institutional capital
The new $1 billion round follows an $863 million raise the company closed in August 2025, whose investors included Nvidia, Google, Khosla Ventures and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, according to TechCrunch. The latest round’s mix of pension funds and sovereign wealth funds marks a shift from the venture capital and technology-company backers that dominated CFS’s earlier rounds toward longer-horizon institutional investors.

SPARC and ARC: what the money is funding
CFS is building two fusion machines. SPARC, a demonstration reactor at the company’s Devens, Massachusetts headquarters, is intended to prove that a compact tokamak can reach scientific breakeven, the point at which a fusion reaction releases more energy than it takes to ignite. CFS now expects SPARC to reach scientific breakeven in 2027, according to TechCrunch. Only one fusion device has previously reached scientific breakeven: the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility, in 2022.
The second machine, ARC, is CFS’s planned commercial-scale power plant, to be built at the company’s Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County, Virginia, in partnership with Dominion Energy. CFS has already signed power purchase agreements for the electricity ARC would generate: Italian energy company Eni has agreed to buy more than $1 billion worth of electricity from the plant, and Google has committed to buying 200 megawatts, or roughly half of ARC’s planned output, according to TechCrunch. CFS also became the first fusion company to apply to PJM Interconnection, the largest wholesale electricity market in the United States, as it targets putting fusion power on the grid in the early 2030s.
CFS uses magnetic confinement fusion, in which powerful magnets hold plasma in a ring-shaped tokamak dense and hot enough for hydrogen isotopes to fuse. The company says its approach draws on more than 150 tokamaks built worldwide to date. CFS’s global capital raised to date compares with broader climate tech investment trends: climate tech venture funding reached $26.1 billion in the first half of 2026, up 55 percent year over year, driven largely by low-carbon power projects tied to data center demand.
