New global map identifies climate-resilient coral reefs across 71 countries

A new global analysis maps the world’s climate-resilient coral reefs and finds far more of them than earlier work suggested. Unveiled on 16 June 2026 at the Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya, the study identifies 165,922 square kilometres of reef — about 64,000 square miles, or roughly a third of the world’s reef systems — with the potential to avoid, resist or recover from heat stress and other climate disturbances. The reefs span 71 countries and 100 territories, three times more survivable reef habitat than a widely cited 2018 assessment found.

The work, known as the “50 Reefs+” study, comes from researchers at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Macquarie University in Australia. It pairs a scientific paper with a detailed global map built by SkyTruth, a technology nonprofit that uses satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to track environmental threats. As reported by Inside Climate News in its coverage of the climate-resilient coral reefs study, the findings reframe a long-running narrative of near-total reef decline. “Coral reefs are often framed as ecosystems beyond saving,” said Emily Darling, a co-author and director of coral reefs at WCS. “Our research shows that there are three times more reefs that may be capable of surviving the climate crisis than previously thought.”

What the climate-resilient coral reefs map shows

According to the 50 Reefs+ preprint, the team compiled 45,064 coral field observations collected between 1960 and 2025, together with 42 climate, biophysical and human-pressure variables. It trained machine-learning models to estimate coral cover and community composition in 2020 and 2050, producing a global map at 250-metre resolution, then used an optimisation framework to pick out reef areas most likely to persist. The headline result is 165,922 km² of potentially climate-resilient reef across 71 countries and 100 territories — adding 30 countries and 54 jurisdictions beyond the original 50 Reefs assessment.

That resilient habitat is unevenly spread. More than half of it — 61%, or 100,755 km² — sits within just five countries with extensive reef systems: the Bahamas, Cuba, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The analysis also flagged resilience in Belize, Panama and the Turks and Caicos Islands that the 2018 work had missed.

The protection gap of coral reefs

Mapping resilient reefs is one thing; safeguarding them is another. Only 28% of the climate-resilient reefs identified fall within protected or conserved areas, the study found. That leaves about 46,000 square miles of high-value habitat without formal safeguards against threats such as sewage and agricultural runoff, sediment loss, destructive fishing, and poorly managed tourism and coastal development.

The authors are urging governments to fold these reefs into national climate and biodiversity strategies, including the “30 by 30” target under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted by nearly 200 countries in 2022, which calls for conserving at least 30% of land, inland waters and oceans by 2030. “They can combine these global predictions with their own data, local knowledge and priorities to inform their decisions,” said co-author Joseph Maina, an associate professor at Macquarie University. At the Mombasa summit, Kenya signed the first high-level global commitment to protect climate-resilient coral reefs — a pledge WCS says more than a dozen governments have now joined, in an announcement titled “Eleven Countries Launch First Commitment to Protect Climate-Resilient Coral Reefs.”

Outside scientists welcomed the work while urging care. Anne Cohen, a tenured scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who was not involved, called it “an important and encouraging contribution” that reinforces a view that “coral reef futures are not binary.” Alizee Zimmermann of the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund cautioned that thin long-term monitoring data in some regions makes her “cautious of such a broad claim,” and said she would want to ground-truth the predictions before acting on them. The underlying paper is a preprint and has not yet been peer reviewed.

Background: from 50 coral reefs to 50 coral reefs+

The new study builds directly on the original 50 Reefs assessment published in 2018 (Beyer et al.), which produced the first global shortlist of reefs likely to withstand warming and helped channel more than 100 million US dollars into reef conservation. The 2026 update widens that lens, drawing on six decades of field data and a far larger satellite-and-modelling pipeline to map resilience across dozens more nations. It is also a working example of AI applied to sustainability and environmental protection: the SkyTruth map uses satellite imagery and machine learning to turn scattered survey records into a decision tool.

With most of the identified reefs still outside protected areas and the first government commitments now signed in Mombasa, the study’s authors frame the map less as a forecast than as a to-do list for the next decade of ocean conservation.
