OpenAI moves ChatGPT Study Mode into parental controls for teen accounts
OpenAI added ChatGPT Study Mode to parental controls for linked teen accounts and new alerts for violent-threat deactivations, announced on July 16, 2026.

OpenAI has added ChatGPT Study Mode to its parental controls, letting a parent with a linked teen account switch the feature on so that it runs by default whenever the teen starts a new chat. The change, set out in a post titled “Why teens deserve access to safe AI” published on July 16, 2026, also expands the alerts parents receive and adds more frequent break reminders for teens. The ChatGPT Study Mode update ties a learning feature that already existed to the account controls parents manage.
Study Mode was built to walk a student through a problem step by step rather than hand over the answer. OpenAI states the feature “was designed in collaboration with teachers, learning scientists, and pedagogy experts to help students work through problems step by step using guiding questions, structured explanations, and opportunities for reflection without simply providing the answer.” Until now a teen could turn it on themselves; the update lets a parent set it as the default for a linked account.
What the ChatGPT Study Mode and teen control update changes
OpenAI describes four practical changes to how teen accounts work. Parents can enable Study Mode from the parental controls panel, at which point it is on by default for new chats. The company is widening the notifications parents receive to cover cases where a linked teen account has been deactivated for breaking its usage policies on violent threats or acts of violence, adding to existing alerts for high-risk situations such as indications of potential self-harm. Teens who spend extended periods in ChatGPT will get more frequent break reminders. And OpenAI is surfacing education-focused starter prompts for teens, such as breaking a topic into simple steps or turning notes into flashcards and practice questions.
These sit alongside existing teen-account settings such as quiet hours, the option to turn off voice mode, image-generation limits, and an age-prediction system that routes estimated under-18 users to a more restricted experience.
The usage figures OpenAI cites
OpenAI frames the update with figures on how teens and other users already lean on ChatGPT for learning. The company states that nearly 9 in 10 teens on ChatGPT use it for learning, information, skill-building, or productivity within a single week. It reports 18 million weekly users of its interactive math and science experiences, expanded to more than 300 topics from integrals and mitosis to moon phases and photosynthesis. OpenAI also cites a pronunciation feature covering more than 61 languages and educational resources published in more than 50 languages.

OpenAI says early evaluation of tools like Study Mode has shown gains in student performance, but the July 16 post does not give sample sizes or effect sizes for that claim. Independent verification of the learning outcomes is therefore not possible from the announcement alone. The company links to a separate learning-outcomes research page for the underlying work.
Who OpenAI consulted
OpenAI names several outside organisations that advised on the learning features and the safety design. It lists the American Federation of Teachers, the American Psychological Association, and Common Sense Media among learning and well-being collaborators, and says it joined the Family Online Safety Institute this year. On the new deactivation notifications, it credits Moonshot, described in the post as a leader in preventing online violence. Vidhya Ramalingam, founder and chief executive of Moonshot, stated that notifying a parent when a serious concern arises “is a critical first step in giving families the chance to step in early and seek help.”
The move follows a wider debate about how AI chatbots handle younger users and academic work. About OpenAI’s education features
OpenAI, founded in San Francisco in 2015, released ChatGPT in November 2022 and has since built a set of education-facing tools around it. Study Mode, launched earlier in 2026, applies a tutoring approach that responds with guiding questions rather than finished answers. Parental controls for linked teen accounts arrived in September 2025. The July 16, 2026 update folds Study Mode and the expanded safety alerts into that same parental-control layer, giving parents rather than only teens the switch that sets the tutoring mode as the default.
