AWS opens Student Rewards, committing more than $500m to cloud and AI training for university students

Amazon Web Services launched Student Rewards on its AWS Builder Center platform on 20 August 2026, describing the programme as “a commitment of more than $500 million in resources to support university students globally with the training, tools, and certification they need to start building careers in cloud and AI”. The company scopes the AWS student AI training offer to verified higher-education students aged 18 or over at accredited institutions worldwide, and puts the potential value at $579 per student.
The $500 million is a company-stated figure. AWS publishes no methodology behind it, no student-number target and no country list, and the AWS News Blog frames the spending as running “during this back-to-school season”. Reaching $500 million at the full $579 per head would require roughly 864,000 verified students, a number AWS does not confirm. The programme was re-surfaced in the AWS Weekly Roundup on 24 August 2026, which is where much of the trade coverage picked it up.
What a student actually receives
Verification runs through SheerID, the identity service AWS uses to confirm enrolment; AWS says most verifications complete in minutes. Unlocking the Skill Builder subscription also requires completing a Builder Center profile with a photo and an About section. The free tier of Builder Center, covering workshops, articles, projects, a public profile and Community Spaces, needs no verification at all.
| Component | Stated value | How it is unlocked |
|---|---|---|
| 12-month AWS Skill Builder premium subscription | $449 | Student verification plus a completed Builder Center profile |
| AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher | $100 | 21 community badges |
| AWS credits | $30 | $10 at 7 badges, a further $20 at 14 badges |
| Total potential value | $579 | – |

The Skill Builder subscription covers more than 900 courses, hands-on labs, certification exam preparation and game-based learning. Badges are earned through activity on Builder Center: AWS lists “publishing articles, commenting, and maintaining engagement”. That structure means only the $449 subscription arrives on verification; the $130 in credits and vouchers is contingent on a student staying active in the community long enough to reach 21 badges.
Builder Center also hosts AWS Student Builder Groups, student-led communities at universities in more than 60 countries. The 60-country figure applies to those groups, not to where Student Rewards is available: AWS states the programme is open worldwide at accredited institutions, “subject to verification and applicable terms”.
AWS student AI training in the wider vendor spending race
Student Rewards lands in a two-year run of large corporate commitments to AI and cloud skills in education. The amounts are not directly comparable, because vendors count cash, credits, donated software and training hours differently and rarely publish a breakdown.
| Company | Commitment | Amount | Announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | Microsoft Elevate, cash and technology donations to education, philanthropic and labour organisations over four years | $4 billion | 9 July 2025 |
| AI training, tools and research for US colleges, universities and nonprofits over three years | $1 billion | 6 August 2025 | |
| AWS | Student Rewards on AWS Builder Center | More than $500 million | 20 August 2026 |
| AWS | Education Equity Initiative, cloud and AI technology through 2029 | Up to $100 million | December 2024 |
| Amazon | AWS promotional credits for education, alongside AI skills training for 4 million US learners by 2028 | $30 million in credits | 2025 |

Microsoft’s Elevate Academy target is 20 million people earning an AI skilling credential within two years. Google’s programme had more than 100 universities signed at announcement. OpenAI has made education commitments covering an AI certification platform, the NextGenAI university research consortium and ChatGPT Edu, but has published no single headline figure, so it does not appear in the table.
Winss Solutions has tracked the demand side of this spending, including a global survey finding 88 per cent of students and 77 per cent of faculty now use AI, Purdue making AI coursework a graduation requirement, and NUS making an AI literacy course compulsory for all freshmen. On the supply side, AWS is already a named partner in the AI-Ready California literacy pilot, and Google Cloud signed a three-year AI deal with Laureate Education.
A separate Amazon schools challenge, for a younger age group
Amazon also launched the Amazon Think Big Community Challenge with Brooks Running as retail partner, Creative Hut as education partner and Wildlife building the AWS-powered generative AI design tool. It is not part of Student Rewards. The challenge is open to students aged 13 to 16 at schools already in the Amazon Think Big network across ten countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Spain, India, Japan, South Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Teams of up to five design a sneaker from Brooks silhouettes and a toolkit of recycled materials, with the winning team receiving a prototype run and a visit to their regional Amazon headquarters. The challenge site carries two different submission deadlines, 9 October 2026 in its FAQ and 30 October 2026 in its key-dates panel, so the closing date is unclear.
About AWS in education
Amazon Web Services is the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com, Inc. Its education work predates the current AI push. In November 2023 the company announced AI Ready, a commitment to provide free AI skills training to 2 million people by 2025, together with eight free courses and an AWS Generative AI Scholarship with Udacity worth more than $12 million and reaching over 50,000 students. That built on an earlier pledge to train 29 million people in cloud computing skills by 2025, of which AWS said more than 21 million had been reached at the time of the AI Ready announcement.
At re:Invent in December 2024 AWS launched the Education Equity Initiative, up to $100 million in cloud and AI technology through 2029. In its first year the initiative reported reaching more than 300 organisations in over 40 countries and issuing $22.7 million in credits, with 76 per cent of participating customers integrating AI or machine learning. Separately, Amazon has committed to AI skills training for 4 million US learners and AI curricula for 10,000 educators by 2028, backed by $30 million in AWS credits. Student Rewards is the first of these programmes aimed squarely at individual university students rather than institutions, and its rewards tier ties the largest share of the value to sustained activity on AWS’s own developer platform.
