Arevon brings the 1,200 MWh Nighthawk battery online in Poway, California
Arevon said on 12 August 2026 that its 300 MW/1,200 MWh Nighthawk battery in Poway, California is operational under a long-term PG&E agreement.

Arevon Energy announced on 12 August 2026 that the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project, a 300 megawatt (MW) / 1,200 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery in Poway, California, is operational. The company said the site is the largest standalone battery storage project in its portfolio and can supply enough energy to power up to 385,000 homes for as long as four hours during peak demand, according to Arevon’s commissioning announcement. Arevon developed, constructed, owns and operates the project, which sits under a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
The Nighthawk Energy Storage Project uses lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry. Arevon said the technology was chosen for its safety record and operating life. The commissioning release does not name a battery supplier; Energy-Storage.News reported that the site uses Tesla Megapack systems. The project charges when demand is low and discharges when demand peaks, which Arevon said strengthens grid reliability in the San Diego region.
How the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project was financed
Arevon closed a $920 million financing package for Nighthawk on 11 March 2026, while the project was still under construction. The package combined a $482 million debt facility arranged by CIBC as left lead arranger alongside ING Capital LLC, NORD/LB, Santander and Zions Bancorporation; a $169 million preferred equity investment with Goldman Sachs Alternatives, structured to simplify tax credit monetisation; and a $268 million tax credit transfer commitment with a corporate purchaser. Arevon said the deal contributed to $5.1 billion in project financings closed over the preceding two years.
“Strategically aligning debt, preferred equity, and transferability structures is essential to financing energy storage projects at this scale and profile,” Denise Tait, Chief Investment Officer at Arevon, said in the March release.

Local and regulatory context
Arevon marked completion with an on-site ribbon-cutting attended by project partners and local officials. Speakers included Arevon Chief Executive Officer Justin Johnson, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Executive Director Leuwam Tesfai, San Diego County District 2 Supervisor Joel Anderson, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Cate, Poway Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Mike Leland and North County Special Needs Community Foundation President Tony Rubino.
Tesfai tied the project to state procurement rules, stating that “through the CPUC’s integrated resource planning and mid-term reliability procurement programs, we identified the need for new energy storage to maintain reliability as the grid evolves”. Arevon expects Nighthawk to deliver more than $30 million in property tax payments over its lifetime and said the project employed more than 130 workers at peak construction.
California continues to add storage at pace, a pattern visible in earlier Winss reporting on record solar and storage installations in the first half of 2026 and on how grid-scale battery storage works. Comparable projects are advancing elsewhere in the United States, including Ohio’s largest battery storage project from Eolian.
