AI use in US higher education reaches a tipping point, Time for Class 2026 finds
Tyton Partners’ Time for Class 2026 finds administrators now lead daily AI use in US higher education at 43%, as formal AI policies reach 32%.

AI in higher education has reached a tipping point, according to “Time for Class 2026: The AI Tipping Point”, a report published by Tyton Partners on June 12, 2026. Drawing on more than 3,000 students, instructors and administrators across over 750 US colleges and universities surveyed in April and May 2026, the report finds that, for the first time, more than half of each group now uses AI at least weekly. It also records another first: administrators use AI daily at a higher rate, 43%, than students, at 32%.
That reversal is the headline of a July 6, 2026 analysis by D2L, the report’s research insight partner. For four straight years, students led every other group in daily AI use. In 2026 administrators moved ahead. Faculty remain the lowest daily users of the three, at 25%.
How AI in higher education reached a tipping point
The shift in AI in higher education is one of both scale and ownership. Daily use has climbed across all three groups, and administrators, who set institutional strategy, now use the tools most. The confirmed spring 2026 daily-use rates are below.
Weekly use tells the same story. Tyton Partners reports that, for the first time, more than half of administrators, faculty and students each use AI at least weekly. The report frames the change as a move “from monitoring students to engaging them”, the subtitle of the 2026 edition, as institutions shift away from policing AI toward building it into coursework.
Policies grew, but faculty question them
Formal rules have followed adoption. The share of institutions with a formal AI policy rose from 3% in 2023 to 32% in 2026, according to D2L’s summary of the report. Confidence in those policies is lower: Tyton Partners found that 22% of faculty consider their institution’s AI policy effective, against 44% of administrators. Put another way, about one in two faculty do not believe their policy works.
Tyton Partners groups faculty into three responses to AI. Integrators, 24%, are redesigning assessments around the tools. Defenders, 23%, are reverting to proctored or in-person formats. The remaining 54% have made no major change to their teaching. The report also notes that faculty who integrate AI report lower workload and better student engagement than those who ban it outright: 30% of faculty at institutions that integrate AI call their policy effective, against 13% at institutions that ban it.
The policy gap echoes a wider debate about classroom rules and guardrails set out in this policy for AI in schools implementation guide. The report’s framing of faculty moving from gatekeepers to guides also speaks to the question of whether AI can support, not replace, teachers.

From monitoring to engaging students
The report links AI use to how well institutions read student needs. Faculty ranked ineffective study skills as students’ top challenge, at 68%, and administrators ranked it first at 53%. Students themselves ranked workload anxiety first, at 40%, and a heavy course load second, at 32%. Fewer than 20% of students who reported mental-health challenges had used institutional counseling.
A second gap sits in career preparation. While 61% of faculty said they assign real-world projects, only 26% of students reported completing one. Students who did take part felt more prepared for work, at 76% against 68% for those who did not. Cheating remains the dominant faculty worry: naming “preventing student cheating” as a top challenge rose from 36% to 55% of faculty in two years.
Cristi Ford, Chief Learning Officer at D2L, framed the choice facing institutions plainly. “The moment is here and the moment is now. We can no longer just pour old wine in new bottles. That time is up,” she stated. The theme connects to broader efforts to build capability rather than only rules, such as the OECD and EU AI literacy framework for schools.
