Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) expanded its operational battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity at its Khavda renewable energy park to 6.63 gigawatt-hours on October 1, 2026, up from 3.55 GWh in June 2026, according to pv magazine India. The company said the figure now represents more than half of India’s total operational BESS capacity, which stood at approximately 12.6 GWh nationally.

The latest expansion was commissioned 10 months after construction began, and the full 6.63 GWh build-out took 14 months from the start of on-site BESS construction, pv magazine India and Solar Quarter reported. The storage system is integrated with AGEL’s 30 gigawatt renewable energy development spanning 538 square kilometres at Khavda, in Gujarat, using lithium-ion battery technology paired with an energy management system and automated telemetry for grid services.

AGEL said the stored capacity is enough to power roughly 2 million homes for a day, is comparable to the battery capacity of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles, and can store nearly twice the Delhi Metro’s estimated daily electricity requirement, according to the company’s figures cited by both outlets. AGEL Executive Director Sagar Adani said the company plans to keep scaling its energy storage capacity as Indian electricity demand rises.

How the Khavda expansion fits India’s wider storage buildout

The milestone follows a broader surge in Indian battery deployment: India’s battery storage additions jumped 84-fold to 8.2 GWh in the first half of 2026 alone, and the sector has since attracted new manufacturing capacity, including a 12 GWh battery storage manufacturing joint venture between Premier Energies and RCT India in Telangana. AGEL’s push to more than 50% of national operational capacity shows storage concentrating around large renewable energy parks tied to a single developer, rather than spreading evenly across many smaller projects.

The expansion also follows India’s Union Cabinet approval of the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, a $19.3 billion scheme that dedicates 50,000 crore rupees specifically to grid-scale battery storage alongside transmission upgrades. AGEL’s five-year target of 50 GWh of storage would, if achieved, equal the entire battery allocation under that national scheme, illustrating the scale a single developer is pursuing relative to the country’s broader federal storage push.

About Adani Green Energy

Adani Green Energy Limited is an Indian renewable energy developer operating 20.76 GW of renewable generation capacity across 12 states, according to the company’s own figures. The Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat, where the latest battery expansion is sited, is being developed as a 30 GW generation hub spanning 538 square kilometres, combining solar, wind and hybrid projects with grid-scale storage. AGEL has previously stated plans to develop pumped hydro storage projects alongside its battery deployments as part of a wider push to firm up renewable output for India’s grid. The October 1, 2026 milestone extends that strategy, with the company targeting more than 10 GWh of additional battery storage in the current financial year and 50 GWh within five years.
